Frequently Asked Questions about Cool Mist Humidifiers:

How do I disinfect the water tank and water basin?
Unplug humidifier from power source. Refer to instruction manual for detailed instructions. Fill water tank with 1 teaspoon of white vinegar or household bleach in 1 gallon of water. Let stand twenty minutes, shaking vigorously with two hands every few minutes, drain and rinse with clean water until the vinegar or bleach smell is gone. Dry with a clean cloth.

Wipe the water basin with a soft cloth dampened in 1 teaspoon of white vinegar or bleach to 1 quart (4 cups) of water. Rinse the water basin with cool water to remove any vinegar or bleach smell. DO NOT IMMERSE WATER BASIN IN WATER an electric shock may result or the humidifier may be damaged.

There may be some white lime or calcium deposits in the water basin and on the nebulizer. This is best cleaned by dampening a cloth with white vinegar, and then carefully wipe the nebulizer and the water basin until the visible deposits disappear.

Wipe all exteriors surfaces of the base with a soft, dry cloth.

Humidifier is leaking water?
A cool mist humidifier generates a mist of water when in operation. If humidifier is set continuously on high the water can condense on the surrounding surfaces. Adjust the humidifier so that you can see mist go up into the air not down onto a surface.

It is normal to have water in water basin and under the top vapor lid.

When moving water tank always have a towel ready to remove water from the top and bottom of the water tank.

Make sure humidifier is on a flat level hard waterproof surface.

When you need to move humidifier remove water tank from water basin and move each part separately.

After checking the above points and the humidifier continues to leak water, please see our customer service site.

Where is this white dust coming from?
The tap water in your area may have too many minerals in it (i.e. hard water). To reduce to this, switch to distilled water or a half tap and half distilled water combination.

What if the mist comes out irregular and/or light switches from green to red back and forth?
Check water level, refill tank.

Check power plug and try different wall outlet.

Check water float and clean plastic ring and float.

Contact Customer Service for Replacement Water Float Set.

Why is the water in the humidifier water basin yellow?
It is important to NEVER let water sit in water tank and/or water basin for more than 24 hours. Water must be changed every 24 hours and after each use.

Water left in water basin over 24 hours may damage nebulizer.

DO NOT SCRATCH NEBULIZER MEMBRANE!

Can I add a liquid aroma, or a liquid medicine in the humidifier water tank?
DO NOT ADD any liquid other than water (ADD) to the water tank.  Adding any liquids other than water may damage the nebulizer in the water basin.

Why does the humidifier run but does not emit any mist?
There is a problem with the humidifierís nebulizer.  Fill out manualís warranty card and send humidifier back to Crane for further inspection.

Why use a humidifier?
Humidifiers are commonly used in homes to relieve the physical discomforts of nasal congestion, dry nose, throat, lips, and skin. The moisture humidifiers add to dry air also helps alleviate common nuisances brought on by winter heating, such as static electricity, peeling wallpaper, and cracks in paint and furniture.

Many physicians recommend the use of humidifiers to help relieve congestion from the common cold, flu, sinus irritation, dry cough and skin. Humidifiers add moisture to the air which will in turn moisten your skin (including nasal passages) and thin some of the mucus in your sinuses. This makes it easier for you to breathe and easier for the mucus to drain. The key is to keep your humidifier cleaned and properly maintained so you don't create an environment that keeps you sick, rather than helping you get better. Please refer to your manual for proper cleaning of your humidifier.

Installing a humidifier in a baby's room is practically a rite of passage for parents. When your baby has a cold, one of the best things you can do help a congested child breathe easier is to make the air moist by using a humidifier.

If you live in a part of the country where the air is very dry during winter, you might consider running a humidifier at night when your child isn't sick to keep nasal passages from becoming dry. Just be sure that the room door is slightly open so that mist generated from the humidifier does not condense on the windows, pictures or walls.

What is the difference between cool mist and warm mist?
There are only a few differences between warm and cool mist humidifiers and the type that is better for you depends on which type is recommended by your physician, or which type helps you breathe better.

Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifiers produces cool mist. A cool mist is generated by a thin film of water is passed over a rapidly vibrating transducer. The vibration breaks the water up into tiny droplets and propels them out into the air, increasing the humidity level with very little noise.

Warm mist humidifiers produce a warm vapor by boiling the water in the humidifier which causes a distilled steam to be expelled into the room. This steam is like a gentle spray of warm water, as opposed to a vapor. The steam is concentrated in the area closest to the humidifier.

How does dry air affect my body and furniture?
Without proper humidity levels the air becomes, in a sense, "thirsty" for water. Dry, thirsty, air will actually absorb moisture from any object it can including wooden furniture, your skin and your hair. With furniture, too little moisture and the wood begins to become brittle and crack. The same things happen with your body. Too little humidity in the air and your skin will become dry and cracked; your hair will dry out as well resulting in more split ends and "frizzy" hair days. Furniture finishes help slow this problem with furniture as does moisturizing lotion and proper conditioning with the body, but these only treat the symptoms.

Will ultrasonic humidifiers cause health problems?
As long as the humidifier is kept clean, there should be no problems regarding health. While cool mist humidifiers do not boil water like the warm mist units, the ultrasonic humidifiers transmit energy to the water through high-frequency vibrations (well above human, and most animal, hearing) that can help break up any bacteria present. While in use the Ultrasonic Humidifier should be cleaned every day and before it is filled with water.

What noise level can I expect from this humidifier?
The Adorable Humidifier is whisper quiet. It uses ultrasonic vibrations at a very high frequency to make the mist. There is fan used to help push the moist air out of the unit. This fan makes a small amount of noise.

Troubleshooting Questions & Answers

Humidifier makes low level humming noise
Generally it is normal for the humidifier to make a low level noise. Make sure the item is not in contact with any other object, move item to different location if the sound seems to get louder.

Water level might be too low, refill tank.

If unit appears to be defective, please see our customer service site.

Humidifier stops every few minutes, what should I do?
Clean the water float. This is done by removing the plastic cap. Then remove the water float.

Once removed wipe the parts with a soft damp cloth. If there are lime deposits present dampen the cloth with white vinegar and wipe the water float, the plastic cap and the pin gently.

Continue to do this until the lime deposits disappear completely.

NOTE: Keep track of loose parts. They are small and easily can be misplaced or swallowed by small children.

Humidifier does not put out enough steam
Turn up the knob at the front to increase output.

Check to see if the fan vent on the bottom of humidifier is not blocked.

Placing the humidifier on the carpet or towel may cause the fan vent to become blocked.

Humidifier should be placed on a smooth flat waterproof hard surface.

Check inside water basin, not the water tank, for foreign objects such as paper, or plastic.

Check to see if water level is to low and needs to have more water added.

If unit appears to be defective, please see our customer service site.

Humidifier is emitting a burning smell
Unplug humidifier immediately.

Check water basin for foreign objects in the water basin (i.e. paper, plastic etc.).

Check to see if the fan vent on the bottom of humidifier is not blocked.

Placing the humidifier on the carpet or towel may cause the fan vent to become blocked.

Humidifier should be placed on a smooth flat hard waterproof surface.

Rinse water basin and water tank with cool water. Allow water basin to dry for 30 minutes. Refill water tank with fresh cool water and operate humidifier.

If unit appears to be defective, please see our customer service site.

Humidifier does not work at all
Check power indicator light. Is it on or off? If on, rotate the knob at the front to see if steam comes out.

If light is off, try the on/off switch in the back of humidifier.

Try to plug into different wall socket.

Check if water float (see parts page in instruction manual) is jammed. If jammed take the upper plastic cap off, release float and then place water float back and secure plastic cap.

If unit appears to be defective, please see our customer service site.

The black ring around the nebulizer in the water basin is dirty and/or seems to be flaking black paint.
The metal ring around the nebulizer is painted black.

The black paint can start to flake in conditions where the water is hard or has high PH.

The paint particles are not a cause of concern because they cannot get into the nebulizer. Clean water basin with damp cloth and dry with a dry cloth.
